Writer/director Sian Heder has made a name for herself as a creative force on the hit Netflix show, “Orange is the New Black.” Pouring her experience on the gritty program into her helming debut, Heder issues “Tallulah,” a troublesome tale of purpose discovered and grief gradually confronted. Although it welcomes viewers with moments of quirk and comforting catharsis, the feature is actually quite disturbing, challenging Heder to locate a way to embrace difficult characterization and still keep the audience interested in the unfolding drama. Heder gets it mostly right, with “Tallulah” largely engrossing and impeccably acted, watching stars Ellen Page, Allison Janney, and Tammy Blanchard create living, breathing people who aren’t easy to watch, yet it’s hard to ignore their fascinating surges of pain.

Tallulah, or Lu (Ellen Page), is vagabond in a van, traveling around the country with boyfriend Nico (Evan Jonigkeit), who’s growing tired of the grind, asking his love to try stability for a change. Refusing to comply, Lu is left on her own, working up the nerve to plant herself in New York City. Roaming around a hotel, Lu is mistaken for staff by Carolyn (Tammy Blanchard), immediately put in charge of her toddler, Madison (Liliana and Evangeline Ellis), while the disoriented mom buries herself in depression and destructive behavior. Lu, recognizing a dangerous situation, takes Madison out of harm’s way, kidnapping the child, bringing her to Nico’s mother, Margo (Allison Janney), who’s dealing with her own issues tied to a complicated divorce. Claiming Madison is Nico’s baby, Lu soon bonds with Margo as they work on their issues. Back at the hotel, Carolyn is a wreck, turning to the NYPD for help retrieving her daughter. [Blu-ray.com]

[RT Critics Consensus]

Tallulah's narrative insight, thoughtfully written characters, and talented cast add up to an absorbing family drama that transcends genre tropes and capably overcomes its flirtations with melodrama.
